Styling Tips for Very Fine or Thinning Hair
Problems with thinning hair, should always be referred to a G.P. as there may be a medical explanation, especially if your hair loss is sudden.
Cutting Guidelines for Very Fine & Thinning Hair
One length or layered? To cut or not to cut? The answer is not straight forward. If your hair is dead straight layering it will mean not only is there LESS bulk, because there is less hair, but less weight to cover thinner areas. If the hair has a natural bend, layering will lighten the weight allowing the bounce to increase, provided that the layering does not make the hair too short to wave.
This principle is true up to a point. Many people, in an effort to cause the hair to lift at the root attempt to perm the hair wavy, curly or even frizzy! However, the regrowth being straight shows the thinness after just 6 weeks. By repeating the perm every 6 to 8 weeks the hair fractures and lightens each time. The result is brassy, damaged hair, and about 5% thinner each time it is permed. Unfortunately, if you are in this cycle, and you elected to have a ?frizzy, curly effect?, growing it out could cause you great distress. Thinner straight roots and a bunch of frizzy curls until grown or cut out. My advice is DON?T PERM delicate, fine or thin hair, or, if you do, be prepared that even the best perm will cause extra hair loss by fracture and a 2nd perm far worse damage than the first. Hair only grows at best half an inch a month, so 6 inches is 1 years new hair.
Styling Tips
Smooth rollers such as covered-heated rollers or sponge cushion rollers will help create a bend without mechanical damage. Self-fixing rollers are the worst for breakage as they pull the hairs out by catching them. Hot tongs are lethal. If they are too hot for your fingers, they are too hot for your hair!
The right cut, the right styling techniques and the right product can really make a difference.
How hair is dried will also make a dramatic difference. Curly hair should be dried using a diffuser and the correct styling product, such as Curl Hold & Shine. Drying the hair upside down maximises root lift, and Curl Hold & Shine will help maintain that lift. The same upside down technique also works on straight hair. Concentrate the heat on the roots and brush away from the head until completely dry. Either the Body Building Spray or the Volumising Air-O-Foam would be ideal. To finish the look dry and style the ends using a round brush.
